Championing Safety in Wallaby Control: Zolve Environmental’s Role in Otago

In Otago, Wallabies are starting to gain a foothold and if they become an established pest will affect primary industry productivity. Zolve Environmental plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of wallaby control efforts. While we do not directly engage in wallaby control, our role involves conducting annual health and safety assessments and audits for all wallaby control contractors operating across the South Island on behalf of the Otago Regional Council (ORC).

Given the high-risk nature of wallaby control work—including the use of 4WDs on challenging terrain, handling poisons and firearms, navigating steep and isolated areas, and working around helicopters—ensuring contractor compliance with safety standards is crucial. Our expertise guarantees that these contractors manage their health and safety responsibilities effectively.

In addition to auditing, we assist contractors in implementing corrective actions and recommendations, building long-term relationships based on trust, and ensuring that the wallaby control program operates with reduced risks. Our primary focus for this ongoing project is ensuring the safety of those putting in the hard yards in the backcountry.
